What is good nutrition? - Good nutrition means eating healthy foods so you can have a healthy body and have energy to play. Eating 5 A Day is a great example of good nutrition!
What is a nutrient? - There are six types of nutrients in the foods we eat. They are carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins, minerals and water. Carbohydrates, protein and fat give you energy while vitamins, minerals and water help your body use the energy from carbohydrates, protein and fat. To make sure you get all the nutrients your body needs, eat a variety of nutritious foods from all good groups each day.
What are the food groups? - There are six food groups that provide the energy and nutrients your body needs to stay strong and healthy. They are grain, vegetables, fruits, dairy, protein and fats, oil and sweets.
What are carbohydrates? - Carbohydrates are often referred to as “your body’s fuel.” Carbohydrates provide energy and calories and are the fuel your body needs to function. Your brain, for example, uses carbohydrates for energy. Some great sources of carbohydrates are grains, vegetables, and fruits.
What is protein? - Your body uses protein to build strong muscles. You can get protein from peas, beans, chicken, fish, meat, dairy products, nuts and seeds.
