Welcome to Spring-Ford Middle School Academics
The programs offered at the middle school level support the belief that all students have the ability to learn. Students are valued for their many talents and the middle school years are a time of transition. During the middle school years, it is natural for your child to become more independent. Though, they still need the guidance and support of their home family and school family. School personnel will provide high quality educational opportunities and strive to reinforce appropriate decision making and personal responsibility.

ELA

7th Grade English: 7th Grade English provides a comprehensive approach to writing instruction in accordance with PA Core Standards for English Language Arts. Students write for a variety of purposes and audiences. Students write clear and focused text to convey a well-defined perspective and appropriate content for informative, argumentative, and narrative writing. Students also practice appropriate speaking and critical listening skills in whole group and small group discussions.
7th Grade Reading: 7th Grade Reading provides students opportunities to read challenging complex texts closely and cite multiple examples of specific evidence to support their claims. Students recognize the interplay between setting, plot, and characters and provide an objective summary of a text apart from their own reaction to it. Students also compare and contrast different interpretations of a topic, identifying how authors shape their presentation of key information and choose to highlight certain facts over others. Students trace how an argument develops within a text and assess the validity of the evidence. They make their reasoning clear to their listeners and readers and constructively evaluate others’ use of evidence while offering several sources to back up their own claims. The use of vocabulary develops to distinguish between denotative and connotative meaning with analysis of the effect of specific word choice on tone.
8th Grade English: 8th Grade English provides a comprehensive approach to reading and writing instruction in accordance with PA Core Standards for English Language Arts. Students experience in depth analysis of informational text, literary nonfiction, and literary fiction to continue to broaden understanding of a wide variety of text. Students also write clear and focused text to convey a well-defined perspective and appropriate content for informative, argumentative, and narrative writing. Additionally, students refine appropriate speaking and critical listening skills.
8th Grade Reading: 8th Grade Reading focuses on improving reading skills through the practice of vocabulary integration and reading comprehension strategies to reinforce reading standards. Reading proficiency is improved through students’ increased understanding of how to construct meaning from literature and informational text. The ongoing development and reinforcement of comprehension strategies promotes independent reading and learning. Through this course students will acquire independent reading strategies that can be applied to in future coursework.

Math

7th Grade Math: 7th grade mathematics addresses topics that are key to building a strong foundation for the study of Algebra 1 in subsequent years. Units of study focus on: The Number System, Ratios and Proportional Relationships, Expressions, Equations, Inequalities, Geometry, Statistics and Probability. The primary resource used in 7th grade mathematics classrooms is Glencoe Math, Course 2.
8th Grade Math: 8th grade mathematics serves to further prepare students for the study of Algebra 1 in 9th grade. This pre-algebra course focuses on topics crucial to building a foundation for success in algebra 1 at the high school level. Topics covered include: Operations with Real Numbers, Expressions, Equations and Inequalities, Systems of Equation and Inequalities, and Geometry. The primary resource used in 8th grade mathematics is Glencoe Math, Course 3.
Algebra I: Algebra 1 is the foundational course for all further study of mathematics at the high school level. Students study concepts related to the Properties of Real Numbers, Solving, Graphing and Writing Linear Equations and Inequalities, working with Systems of Linear Equations and Inequalities, Exponents, Polynomials and Factoring. The primary resource used in all Algebra 1 classes is the CPM (College Preparatory Mathematics) Algebra 1 text.
Geometry: Geometry begins a student's formal study of shapes, angles, and proofs. Students will use problem-solving and critical thinking skills to investigate transformations, measurement, trigonometry, probability, and solids. The primary resource used in all Geometry classes is the CPM (College Preparatory Mathematics) Geometry Connections text.
