MONTHLY MEETING MINUTES FOR APRIL 14, 2008

Number of people attending:  9

 

1.   CALL TO ORDER:  Liz Brull called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m.

 

2.   PRINCIPAL’S REPORT reported by Dr. Mackel:

§  News:

o   Current enrollment: 431

o   PSSA & Terra Nova Testings are done; 4th grade Science PSSA will be 4/29 & 4/30

o   Parent Conferences completed – thanks to Home and Scool for dinner

o   Kenya Project – started on 4/14 with Jim Nowak presenting class assemblies with a slide presentation and pictures of the community.  Money raised last year built a classroom and the money from this year will build another. The walk-a-thon fundraiser is 4/21. 

 

§  Field Trips:

o   Grades 1 through 4 will see the Pottstown Symphony on 4/17

o   1st grade is going to the Da Vinci Science Center on 4/23

o   4th grade is going to the Constitution Center and Historic Philadelphia on 5/1

o   2nd grade is going to Longwood Gardens on 5/1 and 5/6

o   Kindergarten is going to the Jack Hartman Concert at the High School on 5/2.  There is an evening performance on 5/1 - donations are welcome.  The suggested donation is $5.

o   Kindergarten is also going to Genuardi’s on 5/13 and 5/15

o   Learning Support classes are continuing with their community-based field trips and …

o   Learning Support classes have the Special Olympics on 4/17.  Information will be on the morning announcements for the school.  It is at North Penn High School.

o   Environmental Field Trips for 1st and 2nd Grades to the Central Perkiomen Valley Park in Schwenksville

 

§    Assemblies:

o   Bike Safety by the Department of Health – 1st Grade on 4/15 and 4/16

o   Safe Touches by Victim Services – 2nd and 4th Grades on 4/30

o   Water Safety by the Department of Health – 1st Grade on 5/12 and 5/13

 

§  Upcoming Events:

o   Tree planting with a grant from the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary.  17 plants and shrubs on 4/15.  They could be close to the pond, in the habitat or close to the street.

o   Variety Show is on 4/25 at 7:00 pm

o   Walking Club is continuing.

o   RIF is 4/24 and 4/25

o   Book Fair is the last week of April

o   3rd Grade Food Festival on 4/24. It will be in the Cafeteria or upstairs.  More info to follow.

o   Reading Olympics will be on 5/13 at Pottstown Middle School.  There are 4 teams of about 10 to 12 students.

o   Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week is 5/4 through 5/9

 

·         Other Information:

o   No School on 4/22 due to Election Day.

o   Pond installation on 4/18.

 

3.   CO-PRESIDENT’S REPORT by Tracie Hackett and Liz Brull:

  • Beautification Day – 3/17 – just 3 people attended after an all school email.  We’ll need to have another one.
  • Catalog received for mini die cuts - $800 for set – extra dies?  New machine?  We’ll need to make a list and send it out to a few teachers for their input.  Give to Kindergarten teachers for their input.  Consider the theme for next year before purchasing.  Be sure to order cutting pads.
  • The Brain Show – a game show on 3/28. 
    • Huge success. 
    • Positive comments from parents, teachers, staff and students.
    • Have it again next year. 
    • Call it something like “the Brain Show Returns”
    • Have a pizza or hot dog sale in the hour before
    • Mr. Laurie will call to set a date – Dr. Mackel has started next year’s calendar already.
  • End of the Year event – an organizer is needed.  Could be a luau or a movie night.  Tracie Hackett has information.  Friday May 9 and 16 are open.

 

4.    SECRETARY’S REPORT by Karen Pizzuta: 

  • Correction to the minutes from last month.
    • The Entertainment book is not Phila North but Phila West as our primary book.
  • Approval of the March meeting minutes was motioned by Ruth Horwatt and seconded by Marlo Oslon.

 

5.   TREASURER’S REPORT by Pam Ciresi:

  • Copies of the Treasurer’s Report were available during the meeting.  The account balances as of 4/13/08 are:

                        Commerce Checking             $14,464.47

                        Commerce Savings                $27,811.14

                        Total                                        $42,275.51

  • Our liability account stands at -$6,293.93.
  • A motion to accept and approve the budget was made by Marlo Oslon and seconded by Ruth Horwatt.

 

6.   COMMITTEE REPORTS:

§  Book Fair – Dan Rosenblum

o   Will be April 28 – May 2

o   Buy One/Get One free (BOGO) type sale

o   One for Books again.

o   Book Bingo – May 2 Friday Night - Kathy Berry is the chair

§  Admission is one gently used or new book.

§  Volunteers are needed.  Email Tracie, Dana or Kathy.

 

§  Family Fit Nights – Shirleen Smiley and Tracie Hackett

o   For next year

o   More structured with week night events

o   The students can sign up and attend a certain number of events. They would receive a sticker for each event they attend and could get a surprise of some sort at the end – if they had attended so many events.

o   The Dance-a-thon would be one event and then there would be 4 others.

o   Shirleen and Tracie will create a wish list of dates.

 

§  Market Day – Kim McLaughlin and Marlo Oslon

o   March profit was low - $721.59.  If the total for the month is under $5000, we only get 15% profit.

o   Next pick-up date is 4/30.

o   There is a sale on 5/28 and there is going to be 6/25 sale.  This is a new date!

o   We need volunteers (i.e. muscle) to unload the truck – from about 6 to 6:30 or so.

 

§  Nominating Committee – Janice Johnson

o   1 nominee for Treasurer

o   1 nominee for Co-President

o   Could have more than one nominee

 

§  Outreach – Janet Mellon

o   3 books were purchased for the library for babies of Brooke Teachers

§  Training Your Dog by Volhard and Fisher for Isabella Romanelli

§  Kids Make Magic by Burgess for Jackson Bala

§  Pet Hermit Crab by Nelson for Madeline Ammon

o   2 Gift Certificates to Borders Books for 2 teachers

§  Mrs. Novis and Mrs. Purtell

o   Scholarship

§  Card and scholarship for Meeker family

 

§  Spirit Wear – Marlo Oslon

o   52 orders and we earned about $1600.

o   A lot of compliments on selection

o   Stuff will be in the office in a week or so.

o   Many 4th grade parents liked the option to have no Brooke on the shirts.

 

7.   TEACHER’S REPORT – Mr. Laurie and Mrs. Messer

§  Appreciative for dinner at conference times

§  Brain Show was a huge success and many teachers thought it was the best assembly ever

§  Thanks for everything in general.

 

§  Thank you for the Special Olympics shirts

§  7 classes from Spring-Ford all will wear the same shirts

§  The students have a cheer that they have been practicing

§  Bowling carpet a huge success.

 

8.   NEW BUSINESS:

§  Thank you notes from Mrs. Novis, Dr. McCoy and Mrs. Pronchik

§  Muffins for Moms had a great turnout and will be on Ram Country this month.

§  4th Grade will have an end of year event at Manderach Park and parents will be involved in some way for some portion of the day.  More information to follow.
