MONTHLY MEETING MINUTES FOR MARCH 10, 2008

Number of people attending:  11

 

1.   CALL TO ORDER:  Liz Brull called the meeting to order at 7:01 p.m.

 

3.   PRINCIPAL’S REPORT reported by Dr. Mackel:

§  Current enrollment at Brooke is 431.

§  Thank you for the delicious desserts for Valentine’s Day.  Everyone appreciated it all.

§  Kindergarten registration will be March 17 – 19 for paperwork collection only.  Schedule an appointment.  Orientation for Parents and children will be in May and an Open House will be in August.  Screening will be once school starts in August or September – this will keep the information about the children current.

§  There will be a 1 hour presentation at Orientation – Tracie or Liz will be needed.

§  Muffins for Moms on March 14 - run by Mrs. Pronchik – 62 moms are registered.

§  Parent Conferences will be on March 17 and 18.

§  PSSA testing for 3rd and 4th grades during the time of March 31 through April 11.  The first week will be testing and the second will be for make ups.

§  Terra Nova Testing for 2nd grade will be during April 7 through 18.

§  Wish List Items – Well received by the teachers and many good comments from them.

o   Dr. Nepps – feels that this year’s books for Reading Olympics are ok.  Will purchase new books next year – Needs 38 shirts – Becky Steiner created the design – Print at Schuylkill Valley Sports? – contact Tracie for more information.

§  Calendar for next year (2008-2009) is out

o   Spring Break – 3 days before Easter and 1 day after

o   Winter Break – December 23 – January 5

o   Start before Labor Day – August 25

§  Last day of school this year should be June 12 – more accurate announcement to follow.

 

§    Assemblies

o   Stuffee from DuPont Hospital was here on 2/20

o   Dr. Suess’ Birthday was celebrated on 3/3

o   Musicopia (originally Strings For Schools) – Professional Musicians on 3/11

o   First Grade – Department of Health – Playground Safety on 3/26

o   The Brain Show – Sponsored by Home and School – Game show with day and evening performances on 3/28

o   Art Goes to School – entire school during Art class – saw masterpieces and discussed it during the week of 3/3

 

§  Field Trips:

o   Kindergarten went to Limerick Veterinary Hospital and the Vet Center is set up in the Kindergartner area.

o   Kindergarten will be going to the Vo-Tech center for the restaurant trip in early April.

o   Miss Zummo’s class is continuing the Community Based trips to Asher’s Chocolates, WalMart and Bertucci’s.

o   The 3rd grade is going to see the HS musical production, “42nd Street”, on March 27.

 

§  Upcoming Events:

o   Treasure Hunt Night was to be scheduled for April 5 – not sure if enough volunteers – more information will be distributed about the evening’s status.

 

 

3.   CO-PRESIDENT’S REPORT by Tracie Hackett and Liz Brull:

  • Thank you to Karen for staying as Secretary for next year.
  • Fundraiser for next year:
    • Entertainment Book v. KidsStuff Book.  Similar ideas, but different coupons.
      • Vote to go with Entertainment Book.
      • Entertainment suggested Philadelphia West (West Chester, Berwyn) or Philadelphia North (Lansdale, Harleysville) – checked out both books and Phila North will be our primary book.
      • Out of town books possible
      • Can be ordered online – profit still comes to us, but the buyer has to pay shipping.
      • Could we run it out of cycle to get a better deal?  Free shipping? Lower pricing? 
      • Several local schools (Oaks, Royersford, Limerick and possibly Upper Providence) do the Entertainment books.
    • Dance-a-thon – Move it to end of February or beginning of March.  Snow is not a big factor because it is inside.
    • Catalog sale in the fall.
    • Basket Raffle or Bingo – Probably not a raffle – not as much interest.
  • Wish List Items:
    • Muffins for Moms – Home and School covered the cost for 40 books (all of the books ordered before the deadline).
    • ½” Spiral binders were purchased for first grade.  Thank you note was received from Mrs. K. Smith.
    • 2 new items –
      • Mini die cuts - $800 for set – extra dies?  New machine?  We’ll need to make a list and send it out to a few teachers for their input.
      • Privacy shields – for Mrs. Daly.  Approved for $100 for her to get what she needs and then other teachers could get them in the coming school years.
      • Motions for these 2 items was made by Joyclyn Faust and seconded by Kim McLaughlin
  • Tonia Leonard is the new chairperson of the First Grade Publishing Center.  She will send out an email soon. 
  • Treasure Hunt Night needs volunteers – without enough volunteers the event with be cancelled.
  • The Brain Show – a game show will be on 3/28.
  • Brooke Beautification day – 3/17 – clean up outside, kids can come.
  • Track at lunch time – When do we want to start?  Ann Schwenk organized in the Fall – Maybe schedule it so that a parent comes in once a month? Or once a week?  Like the School Store or Wednesday Folders.
  • Walking Club for the 3rd and 4th graders will be starting soon.
  • Spring Spirit Wear – Marlo Oslon is the chair.  Information is as follows:
    • Order forms are in and a new Ram has been selected.  It is the same as the ram from 2 years ago. 
    • Beach Towel has been added - $18.
    • Samples will be in the office.
  • Nominating Committee – Janice, Marlo? and one more person…  More information will be forthcoming and if you are interested in running contact the committee or fill out a form.  There are 2 positions open – Co- President and Treasurer – both are 2 year terms.
  • Letter received from Evans ES – Donation for a basket raffle – they would like Brooke logo items – we are sending a water bottle, sweatpants and a t-shirt.
  • Box Tops – Great turn in!
    • 7160 total!  We earned $716 and we have earned a total of $1389 total this year.
    • Kindergarten - Rickard PM (90) - 1st Grade - Stadulis (591) - 2nd Grade - Hartman (764) –         3rd Grade - Lahr (524) - 4th Grade - Heffner (460)
    • We have already beaten last year’s total of $1114.90 and beat Box Tops goal for us!

 

4.   SECRETARY’S REPORT by Karen Pizzuta:  Approval of the February meeting minutes was motioned by Barb Halphen and seconded by Kim McLaughlin.

 

5.   TREASURER’S REPORT by Pam Ciresi:

  • Copies of the Treasurer’s Report were available during the meeting.  The account balances as of 3/7/08 are:

                        Commerce Checking             $12,044.96

                        Commerce Savings                $27,799.74

                        Total                                        $39,844.70

  • Our liability account stands at -$6,293.93.
  • A motion to accept and approve the budget was made by Tonia Leonard and seconded by Kim McLaughlin.
  • Not a lot of activity this month.
  • Wish list items and popcorn machine paid for approximately $438.
  • Add line item for next year – wish list items.
  • Habitat shed paid for, but not yet delivered.

 

6.   COMMITTEE REPORTS:

§  Beautification – Kim McLaughlin has possible chair.

 

§  Book Fair – Dana Rosenblum

o   Will be April 28 – May 2

o   Buy One/Get One Free (BOGO) type sale

o   Book Bingo – May 2 Friday Night

o   One for Books again.

 

§  Market Day - Kim McLaughlin and Marlo Oslon

o   February sale profit was $816.67.

o   Confusion from last month about bounced check has been cleared – the person who wrote it wasn’t part of our sale but was a long time ago.

o   April 2 is the next pick up date – deadline is 3/26 in school and 3/27 online

o   We are doing well with volunteers but could always use more

o   Maybe we’ll have a June sale – June 25 – but we’ll need volunteers!

 

§  Spring Spirit Wear –Marlo Oslon

o   Samples in the office, order forms out

 

§  Teacher/Staff Appreciation – Joyclyn Faust

o   March 17 is conferences – Teachers will be getting dinner, dessert and drinks.  Bring it in by 3:30

o   Thanks for February’s contributions

 

§  Treasure Hunt Night

o   Will be cancelled without enough volunteers.

 

7.   TEACHER’S REPORT

§  None.

 

8.   NEW BUSINESS:

§  Special thank yous to Barb Halphen and Raelene Jeffers for helping with the Ice Cream Awards for classrooms that collected the most Box Tops for their grade level.  Great success!
