MONTHLY MEETING MINUTES FOR MAY 12, 2008

Number of people attending:  14

 

1.   CALL TO ORDER:  Tracie Hackett called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m.

 

2.   PRINCIPAL’S REPORT reported by Dr. Mackel:

§  News:

o   Current enrollment: 432 (last year at this time our enrollment was 567)

o   Thanks for lunch on May 9 as part of Teacher Appreciation Week.

 

§  Field Trips:

o   Grade 4 went to the Constitution Center and Historic Philadelphia on 5/1

o   Grade 2 went to Longwood Gardens on 5/1 and 5/6 (2 classes each day)

o   Kindergarten had the Jack Hartman Concert on 5/2.  It was a big event.

o   Learning Support classes continue their community-based field trips

o   Grade 2 had their Environmental Education Trips during the 3rd and 4th weeks in May

o   Grade 4 has their end of year celebration at Manderach Park on 6/6.  More info will be forthcoming.

 

§    Assemblies:

o   Grade 1 had Water Safety by the Department of Health on 5/12

 

§  Upcoming Events:

o   Reading Olympics will be held on 5/13 at Pottstown Middle School for the 4th grade.  Good Luck!

o   The Spring Concert will be on 5/22 at 7 pm for the 4th grade.

o   5th Grade Transition will begin in May with the counselors’ visit on 5/15, a parent meeting at Brooke on 5/15 from 6:30 to 7:30, the 4th grade students visit the 5/6 building on 5/28 and a parent orientation will be on 6/5.

o   DIBELS testing is currently for kindergarten and grade 1; next year will be Kindergarten through grade 2.  Eventually it will be for Kindergarten through grade 4, and then it will be through grades 5 and 6. 

o   Kindergarten Orientation will be 5/28 at 9:15 and 1:15.  A letter will be sent home with more information.  Home and School Officers will be present.  All of the elementary schools should have the same schedule.  The students will ride a bus, meet the teachers and tour the building.  They will have an opportunity to meet their teacher in August, and the parents will meet with the teachers as well in the evening.

o   Beach Day is 6/5 in the Cafeteria

o   Olympic Day is 5/30 with a rain date of 6/2

 

·         Other Information:

o   The pond is nearing completion; other work still needs to be done.  The fish are in, plants are in…

o   Kenya Project – final collection was $3712.00.  Almost enough to build another classroom.  Our monies will be combined with another school to build the classroom.

o   3rd Grade’s “Food Festival” was on April 24.

o   Project ACES (All Children Exercising Simultaneously) had all classes walking a mile on 5/7.

o   Sprinkler system has gone out for bid.  Hopefully it will be awarded this month and constructed this summer.

o   RTI or Response to Intervention – A new program for Kindergarten through grade 2 next year and grades 3 and 4 the following – students will be grouped during the day for individual instruction.  More info to follow…

o   Last day for students is 6/12.

 

3.   CO-PRESIDENT’S REPORT by Tracie Hackett and Liz Brull:

  • Tracie thanked everyone for their support over the last 2 years, as this is her last meeting as Co-President.  In addition, it is Pam Ciresi’s last meeting as Treasurer. 
  • Cindy Begg and Christina Frankel were announced as the new Co-President and Treasurer.  Best of luck!
  • One last wish list item – Small die cuts – we are waiting for the announcement of the new theme for next year before the die cuts are selected.  We will save on shipping by ordering everything (dies and cutting mats) at once.
  • There are a few committees that need chairs:
    • Beautification
    • Refunding
      • Box Tops
      • Printer Cartridges
      • E-Scrip
      • Redner’s Tapes
    • Family Nights
      • Ideas?
      • In the past we have done a luau, Egypt Night, Book Bingo, Author Night
    • Book Fair
      • Dana Rosenblum and Janet Mellon currently are the chairs but they would like one more parent to learn how it is run
      • One week in the Fall and one week in the Spring
    • First Grade Publishing
  • The Spring Book Fair was a success – we did better than we expected.  It was Buy One Get One Free.  Thanks to all who volunteered!  We sold the Brooke cook books and earned $96.
  • Book Bingo was held on the last night of the Book Fair.  Kathy Berry was the chair.  It was her first time.
  • Prom on 5/17.  Post prom party is after and SNAP still needs volunteers.  See Janice Johnson, Debbie Landis or Cindy Clark for more information.  The most help will be needed on Sunday after the event.  Walk through from 7 – 9 pm.  The theme is luau.

    • 2 Wheelbarrows (small) are needed
    • Will we need to clean out the water coolers?  Volunteers?

 

4.    SECRETARY’S REPORT by Karen Pizzuta: 

  • Approval of the April meeting minutes was motioned by Kim McLaughlin and seconded by Janice Johnson.

 

5.   TREASURER’S REPORT by Pam Ciresi:

  • Copies of the Treasurer’s Report were available during the meeting.  The account balances as of 5/9/08 are:

                        Commerce Checking             $13,543.58

                        Commerce Savings                $27,816.84

                        Total                                        $41,360.42

  • Our liability account stands at -$6,093.93.
  • A motion to accept and approve the budget was made by Shirleen Smiley and seconded by Janice Johnson.

 

6.   COMMITTEE REPORTS:

§  Book Fair – Dana Rosenblum

o   Response was good to the Spring Book Fair.

§  During the week we had Market Day Pick-Up, Walking Club and Book Bingo.

o   Need another chair for next year

o   One of the only local schools that gets to do Buy One/Get One type sales.

 

§  Market Day – Kim McLaughlin and Marlo Oslon

o   Offered a brief explanation of Market Day for the new parents.  We get ~15% - 20% profit on what’s sold.

o   They now have information for allergy sufferers – gluten, peanut, etc. as well as nutritional information.

o   Our next pick-up date is 5/28 and we’ve added 6/25.  6-7 pm to unload truck (need help!) and pick up is from 7- 8 pm.

o   We are approaching our goal for income for the year.

 

§  Beautification – Kim McLaughlin

o   Who is going to water the plants in the lobby over the summer?  There are 4 ficus and 2 palms.

o   Someone will need to take them home.

 

§  Outreach – Janet Mellon

o   Administrative Professional Day – 2 Gift Cards

o   School Nurses Day – 1 Gift Card

 

§  Spirit Wear – Marlo Oslon

o   Some sizing issues

o   Get samples earlier so that everyone can see them

o   Marlo will chair again in the Fall.

o   Overall a very positive event.

 

§  Restaurants – Pam Ciresi

o   Chick-fil-A evening on 5/29.

 

§  Future Fundraising – Pam Ciresi

o   Innisbrook catalog sale in the Fall.

o   Brochures to go home in 9/3 in Wednesday Folders – Pick-Up on 10/22 Market Day P/U night.

o   Will be able to order online – throughout the year.

o   Dance-a-Thon will be late January or early February.

 

§  Yearbooks – Janice Johnson

o   Will be distributed on 6/6 for the 4th grade to have them for their event

o   Some will be available for purchase if not ordered already

 

7.   TEACHER’S REPORT – Mr. Laurie

§  Lunch was fantastic!  The teachers were excited by the choices and thankful for the time spent preparing it.

§  3rd grade’s Food Fest was excellent with a variety of foods.  Some students even tried new foods.

§  A trip to Crystal Cave is upcoming.
