STOP
AND THINK!
Four
step discipline model
|

(Parents: This is the information that is
presented to the children regarding the Stop & Think program.)
-The Stop & Think program is designed to help you stay out of trouble
-The program will be used in all areas within the school, including specials
subject classes, the cafeteria, and recess
I. Step I:
Verbal warning
-Teacher may give a class
warning; this does not count toward any individual
-Once the teacher gives you a
verbal warning, stating your name, the four-step process has begun
-Teacher will tell you that you
are on Step I
-If you have received a verbal
warning, and if you misbehave again you automatically go to Step II.
II.
Step II: Time out in the classroom (up to teacher to decide length of
time)
-You will go directly to the time out chair in your classroom
-Teacher will state that you have a time out
-Teacher will not lecture or discuss your actions with you at this point
-Quickly and quietly proceed to the time out chair
-You are not to do anything while in the time out chair except think about your
behavior
-If
you give the teacher a hard time or argue, the principal or guidance counselor
will be called, and you automatically proceed to Step IV
III.
Step III: Time out in another classroom (up to teacher to decide
length of time)
-Continued lack of cooperation will result in a time out in another classroom
-The teacher will tell you which classroom to report to
-(Teacher will arrange for students to visit the designated class to see where
the time out chair is located)
-Student is to move quickly and quietly; the class you enter is not to be
disrupted
-You are not to do anything while in the time out chair except think about your
behavior
-Failure to comply results in Step IV
-Time out is designed to give you time to calm down and think about what you’ve
done
IV.
Step IV: Visit to the principal
-All students will be sent to the office with a Discipline Referral Form
-Failure to comply will result in being escorted by guidance counselor or
principal
-Automatic 15-20 minute time out in the office
-You are not to do anything while in the office except think about your
behavior
-The principal will discuss your behavior with you if he is available or will
call you back at a later time
-Copy of discipline referral goes home to parents and must be signed and
returned the next school day
-You will serve whatever disciplinary action the principal deems necessary;
which could include detention after school
-If
you don’t return the paper on the next school day with a parent signature, you
may receive an additional consequence, such as the loss of recess
Step IV is the only Step that involves your parents
-Each day you start with a clean slate
-If
you use inappropriate language, are disrespectful or have a serious or
disruptive behavior problem you will automatically go to Step IV.
-Remember,
the way you behave is a choice you make – Be sure to STOP and THINK before
acting
