Gifted

950 Gifted World History: World Humanities

Grade 10

Students taking this course are eligible for honors credit.

While either Gifted World Humanities course may be taken alone, the English and history components were designed to be taught as an integrated unit.   Gifted History will explore the development of human societies around the world and provide the background necessary to read the celebrated writers and thinkers which you will read in Gifted English.   How did people organize themselves to live together in cities, states and empires?  What types of art and artifacts did they produce? What were their values and religious beliefs?  In what ways are these, our cultural ancestors, similar to us today?  In what ways do we differ from them?  Only within their historical context will you understand the literature and the ideas which emerged from civilizations as varied as Sumer and post Modern Europe.   A primary goal will be to learn how to “think like historians” when looking at our world, rather than to memorize a body of information. As historians we will continually look for “connections” between current and historical events and try to evaluate our human role in creating both the past and the future.  As in any seminar, the majority of class time will be devoted to discussion.  Electronic media provides almost unlimited supplemental materials for our struggle to understand the past and its relevance to us today.   Skills, issues and themes common to both humanities courses will be explored.  This class is open only to 10th grade gifted students with active GIEPs.
