988 World Affairs Seminar

Grades 11, 12

What course will our “War Against Terrorism” take?  Can we reduce the threat it poses to our homeland?  Will there ever be peace in the Middle East?  Can the secular, democratic West co-exist with the growing Islamic world? Is the AIDS crisis in southern Africa a concern of ours?  Is Russia going to be our new “best friend,” or must NATO still stand guard against our old communist enemies?   As the world’s only remaining super power, the United States is called upon to take a stand on many complicated issues.  Using  a variety of news sources, we will discuss current events in order to examine their causes, historical roots, and implications for both the citizens of this country and for citizens of the world.  Role playing, simulations, mock peace conferences will help you understand the vast variety of viewpoints in the world.  Along with other schools who belong to the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia, we will participate in a Model United Nations conference in the spring.  Students may choose to take this class more than once, as the current issues change from year to year.  This class is open only to 11th and 12th grade gifted students with active GIEPs.
