992  Introduction to Philosophy

Grades 11, 12

Do we really have free will?  How can we tell the difference between dreams and reality? Do politicians need to be ethical?  In this course students will be presented with essential philosophical problems.  Intro to Philosophy will provide gifted students with a brief overview of Western thinkers from Socrates to Sartre.  The course will not be arranged chronologically, however.  We’ll explore several branches of philosophy and the major corresponding arguments, including religion, ethics, politics, epistemology, metaphysics, and aesthetics.  Using excerpts from primary texts, students will be exposed to a variety of philosophical writings that have shaped the Western world.  Students are expected to actively participate through discussion, short papers, and presentations.  11th and 12th grade gifted students with active GIEPs may take this course.
