The Allied Health Science program provides high
school seniors with on-the-job experience in a variety of occupations in the
medical field. Students in the program actually spend part of their day in a
hospital, observing and participating in the different job functions of its
various departments.
Here’s how the program works: Students
will spend 1 ˝ to 2 hours each school day rotating among the various departments
of a local hospital where they learn the job firsthand from health care
professionals. Students will have the opportunity to work and interact with
staff from all departments of the hospital including: critical care units,
radiology, respiratory care, pharmacy, physical therapy, clinical laboratories,
emergency rooms, medical and surgical nursing, general medicine and more.
The classroom portion of the program provides
students with instruction in a variety of patient care skills and hospital
procedures to enable them to participate in patient care activities during the
clinical portion of their program. In addition to basic skills, students are
given an overview of the health care profession, different health care systems,
health insurance and other health related issues.
This course is designed for high school
seniors who are in excellent academic standing. Students are
expected to develop clinical objectives and to maintain a portfolio detailing
their learning experiences and skills mastered during their clinical rotations.
