982 Independent Study

Grade 12 3 periods .5 credit

Mature, responsible upper grade students may submit a proposal for studying a topic independently. Students must submit a proposal for study to the AT department detailing what they intend to study, the rationale for studying it, and the criteria upon which your project would be evaluated and graded. A list of resources, both material and people, should be included, as well as a general timeline for the year. Representative topics done in the past were the origins of socialism, Asian history, computer programming, classical mythology and the exploration of the field of law. Students are assigned a mentor who will facilitate, but not plan, their study; all work is done at the initiative of the student. This is not for everyone; it takes discipline and perseverance to complete a project. Grades are given each report period, and it is the responsibility of the student to make sure that they have met the criteria set. PREREQUISITE: This class is open only to 12th grade gifted students with active GIEPs, with mentor permission.
