Language Arts

It is our goal that Spring-Ford students become competent, life-long independent readers and writers of both informational and narrative text.  The accomplishment of this goal requires explicit and systematic instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, grammar, spelling, and writing.

We believe that since students learn at different rates and through various learning styles, it is necessary to differentiate instruction in order to ensure that each student reaches her or his potential.  When necessary, enrichment or remedial materials must be utilized in conjunction with small group instruction.

Instructionally-embedded and summative assessments based on state and national standards are necessary guides to instruction.  In addition to teachers’ analyses of these assessments, students must be included in the use of assessment and taught to self-assess their own learning relative to standards.

As a living document, curriculum evolves and is effective only when informed by dialogue and research.  In order for this curriculum to be effective, we will continue to reflect on “best practice” research to inform our instruction as we strive to meet the needs of all students.

MATH

Everyday Mathematics is a program that embraces many of the traditional goals of school mathematics as well as raising expectations with respect to the amount and range of mathematics that children can learn. In third grade the curriculum is organized into Data and Chance, Geometry, Measurement and Reference Frames, Numeration, Operations and Computation, Patterns, Functions, and Algebra. Also, woven throughout the content are several key mathematical themes that include Algorithmic and Procedural Thinking, Estimation Skills and Number Sense, Mental Arithmetic Skills and Reflexes, and Problem Solving.

SCIENCE

The main objective of our science study is to have the children become accurate in their observations and recording of data. Our science units are not based on a text but on "hands on" learning experiences. Our units involve the study of rocks and minerals, measurement, the planets, examining powders and crystals, using a microscope, and building structures.

Social Studies

Using Royersford as a focal point, we will be learning about various communities in North America. The children should learn that Royersford is similar to other communities but has characteristics which make it special to them.

Health

Our units of study are designed to have the children become responsible for their own physical and mental well-being. Most of the instruction is done through informal discussions, worksheets, and filmstrips.

Handwriting

The goal of every third grader should be to become a legible cursive writer. Cursive writing is expected on the first day of school, and practice/review is provided in class through the use of a handwriting book.
