I have worked in schools since 1999. I was hired by Spring-Ford in 2001 and it has been a pleasure working at UPES since it’s opening in 2003. As a Spring-Ford graduate, I enjoy working with families from the community in which I grew up.

My husband and I live at home with our two sons and two dogs, Dakota and Moose. We enjoy cheering our boys on in the sports of baseball and wrestling and love spending time with family and friends.

Over the past 10 years, I've held many different positions working in schools. For some background... Growing up, I dedicated my time volunteering for Special Olympics of Delaware County, which is where my love for working with children grew. As for my education, I graduated from WCU in May 2013 with a BSEd. in English. I worked as a teacher for a few years, which is when I discovered my true passion—school counseling. Then, I pursued my Masters in PreK-12 School Counseling and graduated in 2017. During this time, I also worked with special needs students through the Chester County Intermediate Unit and CRES Educational and Behavioral Health Services. Most recently, I worked as a K-5 School Counselor at Rainbow Elementary in the Coatesville Area School District. With these rewarding positions, I developed my own counseling style and gained knowledge of how to work with students of all ages and backgrounds. I am beyond excited to continue my counseling endeavors at Spring-Ford Area School District working with students, staff, and families. I dedicate my time collaborating with the home and school team to support and empower students as they grow. I am confident that I have the passion needed to help students become their “personal best.”

On a personal note, I love to spend time with my family and friends, traveling, exercising, baking, and taking my dog to the park for lots of play! My favorite quote to live by as a school counselor is: “All children should be taught to unconditionally accept, approve, admire, appreciate, forgive, trust, and ultimately, love their own person.” - Dr. Asa Brown.

Mission Statement: The goal of the Spring-Ford Area School District counseling program is to facilitate the academic, personal, social and emotional development of each student. Through developmentally appropriate lessons, which are proactive and preventative in nature, enhanced with individual and small group counseling when applicable, students are given the tools to make informed academic choices and become life long learners. Counselors work with teachers, administrators, parents and other school personnel to create an environment conducive to learning and to promote the development of positive self esteem and healthy behaviors. Dear Parent:

As we begin a new school year, we would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the Upper Providence Family. As school counselors, we have the pleasure of working with every student at Upper Providence Elementary, along with many of their parents.

In the role of school counselor, our job involves a variety of duties. Some of these include:

Conducting classroom counseling lessons at all grade levels. These lessons cover a variety of topics, such as skills for learning, emotion management, empathy and problem solving.
Meeting with students, either individually or in small groups, to discuss concerns and brainstorm solutions. These meetings occur through student self-referrals or at the request of a parent or teacher.
Informal assessing of students’ abilities and achievement. In addition to conducting assessments, I assist parents and staff members in interpreting the results.
Being a member of the Instructional Support Team; a group of staff members who meet with the student’s parent(s) to determine what interventions can be utilized in order for each student to reach their maximum potential.
Communicating between the home and school as it is important for student success. Consulting with teachers, on a regular basis, is in the best interest of our students as well as collaborating with parents as a liaison between home and school.
Providing referral options to outside agencies upon parent request.

During the course of the school year, making it a point to get to know each student. Sometimes, “lunch bunch” sessions take place while providing a relaxed atmosphere to socialize and get acquainted. The students truly enjoy this opportunity and look forward to attending!

Counselor Lessons

Developmental Guidance Lessons
Developmental guidance lessons are taught at all grade levels at various times throughout the year. The lessons are designed to meet the needs of the student population. Lessons incorporate a variety of teaching techniques, including stories, role plays, large group presentations and small group activities. Lessons at each grade level fall under one of four categories: Empathy, Emotion Management, Problem Solving, and Learning Skills. All lessons are designed to meet standards established by the American School Counselor Association.

Kindergarten - Each time the school counselor visits the kindergarten class a story is shared, followed by time to discuss and process the information. Kindergarten lessons are approximately 15-20 minutes in duration for a total of 16 sessions. Lessons are taught one time per cycle from September through January. Kindergarten lessons cover the following themes:
- Identifying and expressing feelings
- The learning process
- Problem solving
- Respecting differences
- Getting along with others
- Friendship

Grade 1 – First grade lessons begin in September and go through mid-November. Each lesson is 30 minutes and occurs one time per cycle. First grade lessons feature the following topics:
- Making friends - Following directions
- Respecting differences - Identifying and handling feelings
- Tattling/Reporting - Setting a good example

Grade 2- Second grade guidance lessons focus on various aspects of Self-Esteem and Friendship. The purpose of this unit is to help students develop the skill necessary to develop and maintain healthy peer relationships as well as to create and encourage a positive self-image. Concepts are presented through books, activities, discussions, and role-plays. Lessons start in January and occur one time per cycle for a total of eight 30 minute lessons.

Grade 3 - Conflict Resolution is the focus of the third grade guidance lessons. Students learn to identify situations that trigger anger and ways to deal with anger in a constructive manner that doesn't result in creating additional problems. They are provided with techniques to assist them in resolving conflicts in a positive way. Brainstorming, class discussions and small group activities are integral components of instruction. Eight third grade lessons are taught from September – November.

Grade 4 - Dealing with Peer Pressure and Transitions is the theme for fourth grade guidance lessons. Character education stories are used to present ideas such as cooperation, compassion, peer pressure, teamwork, adapting to change and citizenship. Eight lessons are taught starting in January. Hands-on activities are part of each lesson. Many fourth grade lessons follow a Class Meeting model which assists in developing communication skills to create a dialogue to discuss topics.
