 Math

In fourth grade, students continue using the Everyday Math program.  This program does not have a great deal of built in math fact practice, so I would like to ask parents/ guardians to take time to review those facts. We do a lot of multiplication and division as the year goes on, so it will be critical that your child know their facts.
Unit 6 focuses on the two main concepts of division and measuring angles. Students should be able to divide by one and two digit divisors.  Students have been taught to use a full circle and half circle protractor.  Students should be able to use the protractors to draw given angles.  At the conclusion of unit 6, there will be a regular unit test as well as a mid-year review.  The Mid-year review does not count for a grade and is a tool used to see how well students have maintained the skills that have been taught in the first six units this year.  We will spend some class time reviewing prior to the test.
Due to the intensity of the math program, I can not always predict when the math box quizzes will be.  These quizzes are based on skills that the students are currently working on as well as past skills.  Quizzes are fit into our schedule when we have the time.  Our day is very busy!

Reading

During Unit 6, students read stories such as Koya's Cousin Del, Coming Home, Out of the Blue, and Chocolate is Missing.  Grammar skills focused throughout the unit are: sentences and punctuation,  commas, quotations and quotation marks, and finally reviewing compound and complex sentences. At this point, I'm not sure if we will have time for the unit 6 grammar test.  We have a very busy, fun filled week planned for the last week of school.

                      What's Going on?

Water bottles- Many of the students have been bringing in water bottles and I have allowed them to keep the bottles at their desk.  Normally this is not a problem, however, I've had several bottles spilled on students' work.  In addition to the mess, the students are needing to use the restroom quite frequently which is becoming disruptive to the classroom.  While I encourage students to make healthy choices, and drinking water is healthy, I may have to limit the use of water bottles.

The 4th grade teachers have been planning two end of year events:  the 4th grade activity day and the pool party.  Activity day (June 14th) is a mini field day for 4th grade only followed by a pizza party and water ice provided by the Evans H & S.  The pool party will be at the Spring City pool on June 15th from 10 AM- 2 PM, rain date June 16th.  Parents are invited to join us for this event.  The teachers and homeroom parents have been coordinating the food for the party.  The Evans H & S is providing hot dogs, however, tomato  pie, fruits, veggies, drinks and other snacks will be provided as well.  Each class is responsible for providing something different for the party.  Our class is in charge of drinks.  Mrs. Ward has already begun to organize this and is collecting money towards the tomato pie.  please feel free to email me if you have any questions:  Mrs. Angstadt

Other Thoughts

We will gladly accept donations of tissue boxes. If your child is sick or not feeling well, please take myself and other students into consideration.  You may want to keep your child home to prevent them from spreading their illness to others. While I do strongly encourage hand washing, I can't monitor their every move.

We have morning snack on a daily basis.  There are times that I am able to provide snacks for the kids that don't have one, but I can not afford to feed 21 students on a daily basis.  Please remember to pack a light snack for your child.  We have a long morning and don't go to lunch until 12:10.  Try to make the snacks healthy.  No candy please!

When sending notes in with your child for the office, please clearly write your child's first and last name on the note.  This will be greatly appreciated by the wonderful ladies in the office.

As a reminder, students are not permitted to use Gameboys, Ipods, cell phones or other electronic devices throughout the school day.  They may use them on the bus.  In fourth grade, students are not permitted to bring trading cards of any kind (baseball, Pokemon, etc.) to school.  Please speak with your child about this issue, I have already informed the class of this rule.
