| In addition to learning to care for library books, first grade
students learn to use placesavers when looking for books. Students learn
how to recognize authors and illustrators on the cover of books. They
also learn the difference between fiction and non-fiction books and
their location on the shelves. First grade students are emerging as
readers and are introduced to beginning chapter books.
Students complete many hands on activities based on these stories
ranging from using finger puppets to retell the story, to activity
sheets, to paper bag puppets, and coloring sheets. We have discussed
many themes that occur in books such as friendship, sharing, feelings of loneliness and being afraid.
