Reading Support Classes First and Second Grades: These classes begin in September. I see these students three times a week for a 30 minute period of time each day. We will be working in the "Links to Reading First" program from Scott Foresman. We will focus on learning sight vocabulary words as well as focusing on rhyming words, letter names and letter sounds. Links to Reading First will be used to provide explicit instruction and systematic practice on the critical elements of beginning reading. We will also work with Decodable Readers which will help to build fluency and expand oral vocabulary. We will encourage building fluency by reading each story a few times. |

Third and Fourth Grades: These classes begin in September. I see these students three times a week for a 30 minute period of time each day. We will be working in the "Collection for Readers" program from Scott Foresman. We will continue to focus on and develop sight vocabulary words. Collection for Readers supports vocabulary development through systematic repetition. Strategies will be taught to help develop and support comprehension of texts. We will practice five key comprehension skills - main idea and details, sequence, drawing conclusions, cause and effect, and compare and contrast. Story summaries will also be used in class and sent home with students on occasion to practice reading at home and to encourage the building of fluency while reading. |
