Parents are a child’s
first and most important
teachers. Nurturing a love of reading in children
is crucial for their basic skills.
We
are asking for
your support in a reading
project for this school
year. We are
initiating an all-school reading
program
entitled
“Dive into Reading”. Our goal is to have
each child read 40 books over a two month
period of time. We suggest
that students read every night.
Our program will run
for
two months, March
and
April. The monthly goal is for each child to read 20 books.
A monthly
record sheet will be distributed to help you keep track of your child’s progress.

Kindergarten, first grade, and second
grade students will
read
library books at their appropriate level. When they
are finished reading their
book, they are to record the
title of the book on their record sheet. At the
end of
the month, they should turn their list in to their teacher
for a small
participation
prize.

Third and fourth grade students
will
read books at their appropriate level. Since they
are encouraged to read
chapter books,
we decided that each 25 pages read will
count
as one book. They
should record the title
of the book, the number of pages in the
book, and the
number of books that the
book amounts to on their record sheet (ex. How_to
Eat Fried Worms, 116 pages in the book, 4 books). At the end of the month,
they should turn in their list of books to their teacher for a small
participation prize.

Children may read more than the minimum
number of books suggested. The goal of our program is to inspire reading for
pleasure.
We sincerely hope you will encourage your child to participate in
this voluntary program.
Happy Reading!
