Test Taking Strategies

Test Taking Strategies:

*  Read and pay careful attention to all directions.
*  Read each passage and questions carefully.
*  Read all the choices --the best one could be
   last.
*  Read the questions, and then check back in the
   passage for the answer.
*  Read and respond to items one at a time.
*  Reread when necessary.
*  Don't expect to find a pattern in the positions
   of the correct answers.

*  If you’re not sure of the right answer, get rid
of the answers you know are wrong.  Then make
   the best guess you can.

*  Decide exactly what the question is asking; one
   response is clearly best.
*  Answer all of the questions.
*  Make sure to record the answer in the correct
   place on the answer sheet.
*  Only change an answer if you are sure the first
   one you picked was wrong.
*  Be sure to completely erase changed answers.
*  Work as quickly as possible.
*  After completion of the test, use any remaining
   time to check your answers.
*  Keep a good attitude. Think positively!

How Parents can help:

*  See that your child gets a good night sleep and

eats a healthy breakfast.
*  See that your child arrives at school on time
   and is relaxed.
Encourage your child to do the best work
   possible.

*  Maintain a pleasant home environment and avoid
   unnecessary conflicts.
*  Do not remove your child from school on test
   days for appointments.
*  Wish your child good luck before he or she
   leaves for school.
Parent Strategies for Reducing Test Anxiety:

*  Discuss the importance of testing with child.
*  Have realistic expectations of your child's
   performance while encouraging his/her best
   efforts.
*  Emphasize that the test is only one measure of
   academic performance.

*  Emphasize that test scores do not determine a
   person's worth.
After Testing:

*  Examine all test reports sent home.
*  Determine areas of strengths and weaknesses.

*  Praise your child's testing strengths and make a
   plan to address identified weaknesses.

Performance Tasks:

*  Read the questions carefully, pay special
   attention to bulleted reminders

*  Answer the question that is asked
(it may sound
simple, but it is a very common mistake).

*  Answer all parts of the questions (this means
putting in details from the reading passage AND
   your own ideas).
*  Include details and examples from the story to
support your ideas (sown that you read and
understood the passage by giving details from
    it).

*  Make a Personal Connection by including your
   own ideas.
*  STAY ON TARGET with your writing – stick to
   what the question asked.
*  Write neatly and clearly
*  Only use the space provided
