The Spring-Ford School District requires that fourth-graders be given 45 minutes of homework each evening. Please keep in mind that not all children work at the same rate, and what may take one child an hour to complete, another may take half that time. Remember that homework should be the child’s responsibility. You can help in the following ways:
a. Give help when needed b. Look over the completed assignments c. Read and sign the homework book d. Monitor reading and make sure the name of the book is written in on the reading calendar each night e. Send a note when your child has difficulty with an assignment f. Provide a place where your child can study without distractions
Missed Homework: Homework assignments will be calculated on a point system. Each assignment will be worth 2 points. If the assignment is complete then 2 points are given. If the assignment is partially done then 1 point is given and if the assignment is incomplete then zero points are given. At the end of each quarter the points are added and calculated with the other grades for that particular subject.
I urge that you go over your child’s daily papers with him/her each night. If there are any errors that were not corrected in school, take the time to make certain that he/she understands why the answer is incorrect and help to correct it. If there is still some misunderstanding, please let me know so that I can work with him/her.
Fourth-graders are expected to use cursive writing. Some have more difficulty than others, especially at the beginning of the year. Encourage your child to do neat work, and help with letter formation if you notice that he/she isn’t doing that correctly. It is difficult to change handwriting habits once they are established, so insist that your child keep practicing.
Frequently review addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts with your child. Since these are the basis for nearly all math operations, it is important that these facts be learned.
If a student does not hand in a paper at the end of the day on which it is assigned, he/she will have until the end of the next day to complete all the work. That paper will be marked “Late”, and the grade will be lowered by five points. If a student fails to hand in five or more assignments, it will result in having the report card grade lowered by five points. I will do my best to inform you if your child is in the habit of not completing assignments.
Note taking will take place in most of the major subjects. I will stress the importance of taking notes and guide the students through good note taking. Students will be using their notes to complete work in school and homework. They will also need to study their notes for quizzes and tests. I will be working with the class on how to use their notes when studying.
Each student will use Compass 15 minutes a day. Assignments are correlated with the daily lessons in Math, Reading, and English.
About once a month I will send home an order form for the Scholastic Book Club. The reading level of these books offered by this company is usually well suited for upper elementary grades. Please review the order form with your child and discuss which books would be suited for your child. If you are interested in ordering please fill out the order form and make a check payable to “Scholastic Book Club”. Put the money and order form in an envelope with your child’s name and teacher on the outside.
This year we are continuing our school-wide program for the teaching of pro-social skills. Through these lessons we hope to build students’ self-esteem, self-control, respect for the rights of others and a sense of responsibility for one’s own actions.
If you have any concerns please feel free to contact me through a note, my voice mail or e-mail. I will get back to you as soon as possible. In keeping the lines of communication open we can assure your child will have a great year in fourth grade.
