Valve oil should be applied at least twice a week at this point. Valves should operate smoothly. When oiling a valve you should clean off the valve with a cloth before applying more. Just putting more oil on top of the old is like trying to change the oil in your car without taking the old oil out.
Students should not pull any slides out on the instrument. This is especially true of the first, second and third valve slides. If this is done without holding the valve down a pop will be heard. This will affect the compression of the instrument and cause problems later down the line. The only slide that we will learn about is the tuning slide and Mr. Westlake will adjust that slide as necessary.
Cleaning the instrument is not suggested for a beginner. The best way to keep the instrument clean is to not play it within a half hour of eating. If it must be played after eating please try to rinse your mouth before playing. Mouthpieces may be regularly cleaned by running lukewarm water through them and allowing them to air dry. You can use pipe cleaners or especially designed mouthpiece brushes to give a more thorough cleaning.
