REEDS FOR CLARINET AND SAXOPHONES
The most important part of the clarinet or the saxophone is the reed. When putting an instrument together this should be the first thing that comes out of the instrument case. It then needs to be put into the mouth. The reed should be the last thing that goes on the instrument before playing. It should also be the first thing that is put away when the student is done playing the instrument. Reeds are not be left on the mouthpiece when it is put away.
Reeds are rated by strength. A beginning student should be using a #2 sized reed to start with. A reed that has a lower number will cause the student to incorrectly form the embouchure. A reed that has a higher number will be difficult to produce a tone on. When purchasing reeds make sure they are for the correct instrument as well as the right size.
Reeds do not last forever. Students are given instruction on how to handle and care for them. Eventually or by accident reeds will need to be replaced. Replacement of the reed is the responsibility of the student. The School District and the instrumental teachers are not responsible for maintaining a supply of the appropriate reeds. If done so, it is out of convenience for the student.
At this time, Mr. Westlake will supply reeds and cork grease for the following cost;
Clarinet – Rico #2 - $1.25/reed
Alto Saxophone – Rico #2 - $1.75/reed
Cork Grease - $1.00 per stick
ALL SUPPLIES ARE LIMITED AND MAY NOT BE READILY AVAILABLE.
If a student forgets their instrument and a school owned instrument is made available a reed will be supplied and the student will incur a charge for the reed used or a replacement must be obtained by the next lesson.
