What is Club Ophelia?

Club Ophelia was created by Cheryl Dellasega, PH.D., Professor at Penn State and author of Girls Wars,  Surviving Ophelia, and the recently released Mean Girls Grown Up.

The club addresses issues of Relational Aggression.  Relational aggression (RA) is the use of relationships to hurt others.  Girl to girl aggression most often   occurs with words, expressions, and gestures, rather than physical actions.  Some examples of RA are: gossiping, exclusion, manipulation, eye rolling, cliques, and teasing.  Through instant messages, e-mails, and website postings, the computer is another way that girls use RA to hurt each other.

The goal of the program is to provide girls with the tools to build helpful, rather than hurtful relationships with other girls.

Club activities include arts and crafts projects, role playing, and team building activities which encourage the girls to learn about themselves and others.

As part of the club, the 5th and 6th grade girls are mentored by a carefully selected group of 11th and 12th grade girls from Spring-Ford High School.

In order to ensure that each girl gets the most out of club, we must limit the number of spaces available for participation.  You will be notified about your daughter’s participation after all of the paperwork has been collected.
