Assignments

2/15/07 (as per directions given 2/12 in class) - Using Emerson’s Nature, discuss, debate, defend or refute at least two (2) chapters of the essay (Nature) and attempt to prove/disprove Emerson’s philosophy within it.  For example, do you find that he “practices what he preaches?”  Do you find his theory noble, but hypocritical?  Find your own voice and write a 3-4 page paper supporting your claims.  Remember, employ your knowledge of Transcendentalism to strengthen your argument(s).  Thank you for your hard work recently.  I am proud of your efforts in class.  Undoubtedly, your practice (and patience) regarding PSSA preparation will prove to be successful for you.  Enjoy a well-deserved break.  To quote Emerson, “What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us.”  Remember this as you write your first paper on Transcendentalism!

1/22/07  LOTM Projects due!  Please be sure you also bring in any written components required of your selected project.  PSSA Preparation at the onset of the period.

1/19/07  Happy Birthday EAP!  You would be 198!  But alas—Nevermore!!!  We continued with the Creative Writing workshop.  Excellent work everyone.  Work on your LOTM Projects this weekend!  They are due Monday!

1/12/07  Poe Exam (biography, works, themes, characters, symbols, etc.)  The titles of studied/discussed pieces will be provided for you.

1/11/07  Romantic Poetry Reading— Excellent readings, I might add…  You all continue to inspire me.

1/10/07  Discussion of Usher

1/9/07  Today we read The Fall of the House of Usher in class.  Please write on your packets and attempt to relate the short story to Poe’s life.  Also, as per the board agenda and my verbal directives, how do the narrators of this piece and Ligeia compare/contrast?  Keep looking for a Romantic poem of your choice for our poetry reading on Thursday...

1/8/07  Be ready for more E.A.P. tomorrow!  Nice discussion today, classes.  I appreciate your candid responses today.  Mr. Poe would be proud of you. Tomorrow you will be reading The Fall of the House of Usher, another of Poe’s classic torments in prose.

1/5/07  Read Ligeia—write a one-page reaction/response to the piece.  React to any part/parts of the story in your own work. (themes, psychoanalysis, reader-response theory, Poe’s life and its application to the short story)  Pick/choose your individual approach to the assignment.  Due 1/8/07—one page—focused!

12/14/06:  Periods 1 and 9: Create 5 questions derived from/inspired by class discussion.  Nice job today with LOTM.
