RAM REVIEW: Special End of Year Review

Looking Back on 2018

As 2018 comes to a close, we reflect on all of the positive work done in our schools each day. On any given day a student is learning how to read a chapter book, is working side-by-side an English Language Development (ELD) teacher to master a new language, is building robots in the Tech Suite at the High School, or is creating masterful works of art. I want to take this opportunity to extend a warm thank you for being a part of the Spring-Ford family. As I reflect on our progress and look ahead to our future, our school community will continue to be at the heart of everything we do.

Wishing you a happy and healthy New Year!

Dr. David Goodin

Spring-Ford Superintendent

MOST LIKED #4: You Matter. You Matter is a movement to spread the word that your problems, your worries, your fears, and above all YOU matter. MOST LIKED #5: Spotted lanternflies have been seen roaming the halls of Spring-Ford Area High School. This rare picture was captured on Day 2 of Spirit Week, Dress Alike Day. The spotted lanternfly is a planthopper native to Royersford. Although it has two pairs of wings, it jumps more than it flies and can often be found carrying books from room-to-room. Its host plants are grapes, pines and stone fruits. In its native habitat it is kept in check by natural predators (homework, tests and curfews).  It was originally introduced in the Spring-Ford Area High School 10-12 Grade Center in 2016 and is now on the brink of "senioritis." This particular species is expected to move on to bigger and better things in June 2019. If seen, please do not harm the Spotted Lanternflies as they are quite intelligent, athletic and artistic.

MY BEST MEMORY OF 2018...

"My most heartwarming memory of 2018 was when the Football Team – along with my son – and the Spring-Ford Cheerleaders represented Spring-Ford at RACK (Random Acts of Kindness)." – Lee Albert, Spring-Ford Booster Club President and SFASD Parent

"Both of our boys transitioned to new schools and schedules during 2018. One made the big step up to 7th grade and the other said 'goodbye' to Brooke Elementary to start 5th grade! Despite the jitters and nerves, they have both achieved great academic success and are enjoying awesome extra-curriculars in the music program and athletics! In 2018, the Stadler boys truly grabbed the Ram by the horns!" – Roseann Stadler, SFASD Parent

"I joined my team – the Eagles Flag Guys – at the Super Bowl. It was a memory that will last a lifetime!" – Dr. Allyn Roche, SFASD Assistant Superintendent

"Watching the Spring-Ford Golden Rams Marching Band come from behind to win the Cavalcade of Bands competition. They took second place in three previous competitions, but at Championships they went for it and won! It was the most awesome win in my six years as a band parent!" – Clinton Fetterman, Spring-Ford Music Association President and SFASD Parent

"Spending the last few days with my grandfather before he passed away. He was teaching me how to build steps and a house." – Brian Aikens, Upper Providence Elementary School Emotional Support Teacher

"I asked the most important person in my life a very important question, and she said 'Yes!'" – Andrew Rothermel, Manager of Communications Media

"My best memory of 2018 is celebrating several milestones—my Grandmother turned 90, my Dad turned 70 and retired, I became the parent of a teenager, and I got my first nephew! Lots to be grateful for. Here's hoping 2019 is even better!" – Erin Marcellus, Limerick Elementary School Teacher

"I had an amazing year, I'm so thankful for everything single thing. I spent the year celebrating being a Mom-Mom, there are no words even to describe it!" – Randi Law, Spring-Ford IT Support Center Coordinator

"Having the whole School Board together on the float for the Spring-Ford Homecoming parade!" - Colleen Zasowski, Spring-Ford Board Vice President and SFASD Parent

POSITIVE FAMILY RESOLUTIONS

8 Smart and Fun New Year's Resolutions Kids Can Make from Parents.com

If you typically start the New Year fresh by making resolutions, consider getting your kids in on the tradition this year. Not only can it be a valuable teaching moment about setting goals and sticking to them, but the practice of choosing an achievable resolution for the new year can be a fun way for kids to develop their communication and decision-making skills. Just keep in mind that resolutions should always be discussed in a positive way with children: for example, saying "I'm going to do this..." instead of "I'm going to STOP doing this..."

  • Instead of: "I'm going to eat healthier." Suggest: "I'm going to drink two glasses of milk each day instead of soda or juice." Or, "I'm going to eat two pieces of fruit at lunch each day."
  • Instead of: "I'm going to exercise more." Suggest: "I'm going to join a soccer team." Or, "I'm going to go to yoga class with Mom on Saturdays.
  • Instead of: "We're going to cut down on screen time." Suggest: "We're going to read for 30 minutes before bed instead of watching TV."
  • Instead of: "I'm going to help out around the house." Suggest: "I'm going to set the table for dinner every night." Or, "I'm going to help clean my bedroom once a week."
  • Instead of: "I'm going to be nicer to people." Suggest: "I'm going to do one random act of kindness a week." Or, "I'm going to talk to one person at school I've never met each week."
  • Instead of: "We're going to be more eco-friendly." Suggest: "We're going to start a recycling program at home." Or, "we're going to shorten our showers to only five minutes to conserve water."
  • Instead of: "I'm going to learn something new. "Suggest: "I'm going to learn how to make chocolate chip cookies." Or, "I will learn how to sing."
  • Instead of: "We're going to spend more quality time together." Suggest: "We're going to have game night every Friday." Or, "we're going to eat breakfast together on Sunday mornings after church."
