Take Note: Proposed Final Budget Update

The Spring-Ford School District Board of School Directors voted to adopt the proposed final budget of $164,444,651 for the 2018-2019 school year during the regular meeting of the Board on May 29, 2018. The proposed budget includes a 2.35% tax increase, which equates to an increase of .6157 mills, resulting in a proposed millage rate of 26.8599.

Dr. David Goodin, Superintendent of Schools, and Mr. James Fink, Chief Financial Officer, presented the 2018-2019 Proposed Final Budget at the May 21, 2018 School Board Meeting. The presentation included:
- Challenges in preparing the budget
- Expenditure changes year/year
- Revenue changes year/year
- 2017/2018 budget gap and tax impact

How does Spring-Ford compare? With over 8,000 students, Spring-Ford is the third largest district in Montgomery County. Based on the 2018-2019 Proposed Final Budget, Spring-Ford will rank fifth lowest cost per student in Montgomery County, and will remain the sixth lowest millage rate (tax rate) in the county.

- Proposed Final Budget made public by June 8, 2018
- Public notice of intent to adopt as Final Budget by June 18, 2018
- Adopt Final Budget on June 28, 2018 (revised from the presentation)

Athletic Team Spotlight

This month, the Spring-Ford Board of School Directors recognized the following student athletes for their achievements this season:

  • Boys' Lacrosse Team for winning the 2018 Pioneer Athletic Conference (PAC) Boys' Lacrosse Championship
  • Boys' Tennis Team for winning the 2018 Pioneer Athletic Conference (PAC) Boys' Tennis Championship
  • Malchu Pascual for winning the 2018 Pioneer Athletic Conference (PAC) Boys' Tennis Singles Championship and qualifying for the PIAA District One Boys' Tennis Tournament
  • John T. Clark, Milan Sharma, Zachary Smith and Calvin Thomas for winning the 2018 Pioneer Athletic Conference (PAC) Boys' 4x800 Meter Relay Championship
  • Brooke Donaghue, Sydney Galster, Emily Smith and Julia Vledder for winning the 2018 Pioneer Athletic Conference (PAC) Girls' 4x800 Meter Relay Championship.

Farewell to Taylor Stevens

School Board members bid farewell to Taylor Stevens, the current Student Representative to the School Board. Taylor will be attending Jefferson University in the fall.

The Board welcomed Julianna Lelli as the new Student Representative to the School Board.

School Spotlight: Brooke Elementary ELD Program

Mary Pat Long, Brooke Elementary School Principal; Sandra Cerniglia, Tara Chester and Marisa Lacy, ELD Teachers; Gina Romanelli, Teacher; Christina Ibarra and Elaine Li, High School Students; and Jonathan Salla and Ivana Ventura, Brooke Students, presented on "English Language Development (ELD) in Spring-Ford Today."

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Education, there are more than 61,000 English Learners (ELs) speaking more than 200 different languages in Pennsylvania. The goal of language instruction educational program is to facilitate the development of English proficiency and academic achievement of students whose first language is not English. Without instruction and appropriate support for learning academic content, these students would be at risk of losing the educational opportunities provided to non-EL students.
