Class Spotlight: Hydrogen Space Balloon
Earlier this year, the Exeter Library and Spring-Ford Area High School sent a Hydrogen Space Balloon to Deer Trail, Colorado into space! Yes, they sent a balloon into space!

After the hydrogen space balloon bursts at the edge of space (above 100,000 feet) the payload box will plunge back to Earth. At burst altitude, the balloon grew to a size larger than a house and could be seen from the ground with binoculars. When it reencountered air, the parachute deployed, and the string of payload boxes landed to be recovered by a ground chase team. If the parachute does not open, the payload will be lost.

After the chase team recovers a payload, they mail the box back to the original sender. Spring-Ford's payloads have included space-flown bookmarks, space-flown zinnia flower seeds (the low temperature, increased radiation, and no air might affect the flower seeds), and an onboard GoPro snaps pictures along the way.

Special thanks to Mr. Daniel Leppold, SFAHS teacher, for launching the Space Balloon Project year after year!
