READ ACROSS AMERICA

Unlike the weather folklore foretelling March’s forecast, “In Like a Lion and Out Like a Lamb”, Read Across America’s ending at SCE was nothing like a quiet lamb.  In fact, it ended the same way it came in…roaring like a Lion!

Throughout the month of March, it was a close race amongst our second and fourth grade classes as to who read the most books.  In total, 3,365 books were read by our students by the end of March.  We are Spring City Elementary…Hear Us Roar!  The top winning number of books read by class were:

  • Mrs. Eaton:  1,085 Books
  • Mrs. Silcox:  923 Books
  • Mrs. Johnson:  310 Books

During our Schoolwide Assembly on March 27, prizes were awarded as follows:

  • Mrs. Eaton’s class Silly Stringed Mrs. Choi.
  • Mrs. Silcox’s class:  Finer Diner with Mrs. Choi.
  • Mrs. Johnnson’s class:  Pied Mr. Long.

In addition, as an incentive, all students received a voucher for 4 FREE tickets to attend a R-Phils baseball game on special eligible dates.  Orion Communities donated books for every student to support literacy in the home; these books were the same ones read during our Family Reading Night on March 1.  Lastly, Mrs. Choi chose a variety of books and did class Read Alouds to promote the joy of reading.

Dreaming of Kindness Family Reading and Resource Night, March 1, 2024

“There are many little ways to enlarge your child’s world.  Love of all books is the best of all.”  Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis

On Friday, March 1, SCE hosted its second annual Family Reading and Resource Night.  This event kicked off Read Across America.  The goal was to get books into the homes of our students so they can embrace the joy of reading, which opens their imagination, increases their knowledge, and expands their vocabulary.  SCE students and their families started by enjoying slices of pizza, which was donated by Center City Steaks and Pizza in Spring City, and chips and juice boxes donated by our Home and School Association.  Afterwards, the groups were asked to go to their assigned rooms to hear a story read by one of our teachers, followed by a craft relating to the story they just heard.  At the end of the first session, there was a brief intermission and then the second session started with the groups swapping rooms to hear a different story with associated craft.

While students were listening to stories, making crafts, parents were invited to visit Vendors from parts of our community who volunteered their time and services to our SCE families.  In attendance, were both Spring City and Royersford Libraries, Lowe’s Home Improvement, Spring Valley YMCA, Action Karate, Orion Communities, Title One Math, Title One Reading, and our Home and School Association.

 To recap…

Total Number of Families:  55

Total Number of Adults:  77

Total Number of Children:  78

Our Title teachers spoke with parents about strategies and resources to support literacy and numeracy in the homes.

Over 500 books were donated for students by Orion Communities, Spring City and Royersford Libraries combined.

Lowe’s Home Improvement gave away DIY kits for students and their families to take home and build together.

In summary, the hard work, time, and dedication of our SCE staff made this event soar to the level that it did.  There was a solid sense of community and enthusiasm for reading portrayed by those who attended.  Parents had both hands full of books and items that they needed to make trips to their vehicles to unload!

Some quotes from the event:

Miss Jacqueline Pizzico, Second Grade Teacher:  “My students were raving about all their new books, crafts, and fun things they got from the fair. They loved the pizza 😉. They said they wish we had this every Friday lol. I had former students popping by telling me about what they got from the resource fair and how they are excited for Pokémon club at the library and taking classes at Karate. I had mom’s coming up to me the night of sharing that they did not know that Orion had a single mom’s group. I am so glad we were able to put the event on for our students and families.  Thank you all for making it possible. ❤”

Katie Price, Project Specialist, Orion Communities:  “I wanted to extend our gratitude to you and the entire team at Spring City Elementary School for including us. It truly was the highlight of our week.  We are thrilled to share that we were able to give away a total of 349 books during the event.

Once again, thank you for providing us with the opportunity to be a part of such a wonderful event. We look forward to future collaborations and continuing to support the incredible work you do at Spring City Elementary School.”
